Day 9:Hinton AB to Dawson Creek BC; Hwys 40, 43 & 2 ; 500km

Below is a link to Google Maps of today's route.

We were very lucky today. The forecast had been for rain all night & all day.  Instead we woke to overcast skies threatening to get worse, but it didn't happen.  Only a few sprinkles throughout the day. We still put on our rain gear to keep us warm.  The temperature started @ 8 & went to 18 by the end of the day.

We started up hwy 40 after taking this picture.
I can't say that it was all that scenic or maybe we are becoming accustomed to seeing mountains, forests, rivers & the odd bit of wild life.  If anything, it was desolate.  About 183 kms between towns.  Not a good situation for a medical emergency.  They would have to travel quite a ways before they go to the scene to help.

As I was thinking that, a buck or doe bounded across the road about 200 feet in  front of me.  I am sorry I can't tell you which favour it was. I was too busy sounding the horn & applying the brakes to check out its' gender.  It was long gone by the time I had slowed down.

Today we arrived in Dawson City the start of the Alaska hwy.  There were a few required photos now that we had ridden 5500 kms to officially begin our trip up the Alaska Hwy etc.

An interesting pub in town

We met a new member of our crew today.  Dave Auld from Penticton BC is another Motorcycle Mojo reader that responded to Peter's request for participants.  He will be riding with us up the Alaska  & Dempter Hwys & to the border crossing into Alaska.

  Welcome aboard Dave....picture tomorrow

  1. Hey Doug & Peter -
Just to let you know how much we are enjoying your blog, living vicariously through your travels and travails. It sounds like a gas, but you are certainly earning your passage.
Keep up the good work. May the wind be at your backs and may the northern sun warm your hands and hearts.
Best, Jack (and Gerri), site of Peter's last home-cooked meal
